‘The Smurfs’ Upsets ‘Cowboys & Aliens’ In Friday Box Office

Written by Michael Lambarde on Jul. 30, 2011

Early Friday box office projections indicate that there will likely be a box office upset once the weekend is said and done. The animated film The Smurfs was able to outdraw Cowboys & Aliens this weekend, despite the latter having an advantage of being in more theaters as well as having industry sources predict that it would come out on top. Nonetheless, The Smurfs was able to rake in $13.3 million on Friday, 3% better than Cowboys & Aliens‘s $12.99 million.

Industry analysts indicate that even though The Smurfs got the last laugh on Friday, Cowboys & Aliens may very well come out on top by the end of the weekend.

Elsewhere, week two of Captain America brought in $7.9 million, bringing in an estimated total revenue of nearly $100 million. Week three of the final Harry Potter movie, Deathly Hallows Part 2 brought in $6.6 million to bring its total gross over the $300 million threshold. It has now become the second highest-grossing film of the franchise, behind Sorcerer’s Stone. Crazy, Stupid, Love rounded out the top five with $6.6 million.
