The son of Ryan O’Neal and the late Farrah Fawcett, Redmond O’Neal, 26, pled not guilty in court yesterday stemming from being pulled over earlier this week and being found with a gun and heroin in his car. He was formally charged of possession of a firearm by a felon and possession of a controlled substance. In April 2009, he was arrested for drug smuggling charges.
“A felony, was committed by Redmond James O’Neal, who did unlawfully own, possess, purchase, receive, and have custody and control of a firearm, to wit, handgun, the said defendant having theretofore been duly and legally convicted of a felony or felonies,” a gun complaint against O’Neal read.
If convicted on the two charges, he could be sentenced up to nearly four years behind bars, according to a Los Angeles Country district attorney, and possibly more for violating his probation.
Yesterday, TMZ caught up with his father, who said that his family is “falling apart”. This comes after Redmond was pulled over by police on Tuesday and his other son — Griffin, 46, whom he hasn’t seen in years — got into a head-on collision car accident just hours later. O’Neal admitted that his son has “a real problem,” but seemed optimistic about his family’s troubles, saying that they will “come back”.
Like his father, Redmond seems optimistic that he will be able to get past this, according to his lawyer Richard Pintal. “Redmond O’Neal remains cautiously optimistic that all these matters can be favorably resolved so that Mr. O’Neal can receive opportunity for additional treatment,” Pintal told CNN.
Both Ryan and his half-siblings, Tatum and Patrick, appeared in court yesterday along with Redmond, showing him their support.
