The Internet exploded today with news that Doug Hutchison, 51, recently wedded a 16-year-old. Hutchison, who is known for his role in the 1999 film The Green Mile and, most recently, on ABC’s Lost as Horace Godspeed has been criticized by many critics and those weighing in on the topic on Twitter. One user called that 35 year age difference “gross and disgusting”, while another user noted that “love doesn’t have an age”.
According to tabloid Us Magazine, the couple got married exactly one month ago on May 20th in Las Vegas, Nevada. Many have been questioning whether the marriage is legal in Nevada, not because of the age difference, but because how young his wife Courtney Alexis Stodden is, a beauty pageant queen and someone looking to break into country music.
However, in Las Vegas, the marriage is legal as long as one of Stodden’s parents signed off on the marriage. The law states that anyone under the age of 18 can only get married if they get the consent of their parents, which is obviously what she did if they did indeed get married. In a statement following the story leaking, Wetmore released a statement addressing the age difference: “We’re aware that our vast age difference is extremely controversial,” the couple told reporters through E! “But we’re very much in love and want to get the message out there that true love can be ageless.”
