Former Presidential Candidate John Edwards has been indicted for misusing campaign funds to cover up his affair with his mistress Rielle Hunter. What this means is that he can either work out a plea deal with the prosecution or go on trial. Edwards held a press release saying that he is refusing to plead guilty, and according to various source, has already refused several plea deals. According to People, he was indicted in the state of North Carolina for one count of conspiracy, four counts of illegal campaign contributions, and one count of lying.
The issues here is that Edwards and his former former aide Andrew Young secretly paid money to Hunter to keep the affair and their child — which Edwards later admitted to — a secret. According to a report from the National Enquirer, when Edwards found out he was close to being indicted, he “begged Rielle to cover for him”. A source goes on to say that “[Edwards] was hoping she would say and do whatever it takes to keep him from going to jail.” He even went to far as begging Rielle to marry him.
Rielle, however, thought that the proposal from Edwards “was just another way to protect himself. She thought if she was his wife, she wouldn’t have to testify against him in a criminal trial.” It didn’t end there, though. Rielle apparently screamed to Edwards that he was “pathetic” and a “coward” and that she was done with him. Edwards then cried, “I don’t want to go to jail,” but Hunter didn’t fall for it and dumped him. Edwards and Rielle are now no more, and Edwards has cut Rielle off financially on everything but her child support and her legal bills for the case. “John is so angry at Rielle,” the source adds.
