‘DWTS’ Champ Hines Ward Arrested For DUI, Says He Wasn’t Drunk

Hines Ward — who won this past season of ABC’s Dancing with the Stars in May, as well as being known for being the wide receiver for the NFL’s Pittsburgh Steelers — has been arrested for driving while intoxicated in the state of Georgia. He was stopped by police in the early hours of Saturday morning in the county of DeKalb. He was then taken to the police station but was later released on a $1,000 bond.

TMZ reported the story later that morning, but it was after Hines was bailed out of jail. NFL stars who are found receiving DUI’s or the like are usually reprimanded by the NFL. At the end of June last year, for example, Tom Lewand — the president of the Detroit Lions — was suspended for a month and ordered to pay $100,000 for violating NFL’s personal conduct policy for having a blood alcohol level of .20% in Michigan, more than twice the legal limit of 0.08%. However, the NFL remains in a lock out and it remains to be seen if the NFL will do anything to him at this point. Ward, however, seemed to obviously be very low-key about it as he was arrested early Saturday and dodged out of jail before the TMZ story was posted just after 6AM PDT.

In a statement released to TMZ, Ward’s manager, Andrew Ree, denied that Ward was driving drunk. “He cooperated fully with the police and truthfully answered all of their questions,” Ree said. “We are currently in the process of ascertaining all the facts. From our preliminary investigation we can tell you that we are confident that the facts will show that Hines was NOT impaired by alcohol while driving. However, Hines is deeply saddened by this incident and apologizes to his fans and the Steelers organization for this distraction.”
