Drake has been tapped to emcee the 2014 ESPYS, the 27-year-old Grammy Award-winning artist announced on his Twitter account.
“Honored to be this year’s @ESPYS host @espn 7.16.2014 #ESPYS #NWTS,” the Canadian recording artist tweeted to his 14.7 million followers Wednesday.
“This is an incredible opportunity for me to combine two of my biggest passions-sports and performing,” the rapper later said in an official statement.
TMZ reports that his critically-acclaimed performance on NBC’s “Saturday Night Live” earlier this year was pointed out by the rapper during a meeting with producers, which helped seal the deal.
“Drake is an unbelievably talented entertainer who truly has a passion for sports. We are thrilled to have him to host this year’s show,” said Connor Schell, vice president, ESPN Films and Original Entertainment, who oversees the ESPYS.
Adds Maura Mandt, executive producer, “Drake’s charisma, energy and fearlessness come across whether he’s performing music, acting or doing comedy. We are all in for an Unforgettable program.”
The annual ESPN event — which celebrates the year’s best moments in sports — emanates from the Nokia Theatre L.A. Live in Los Angeles, Calif. on Wednesday, July 16.
Drake, who is said to be “extremely passionate” about the gig, is reportedly already rehearsing for the event.
