The planking game, also called the lying down game, recently has become all the rage in the United States following the fad being described as “sweeping Britain” by late 2010 by Andrew Sullivan. The game is even captivating some celebrities to take part in it. For those of you who aren’t in know about the game, it is basically — as the title describes — a lying down game where the person taking part in the game must lie down in an unusual location where their hands must touch the sides of the body. The fun of the game comes when those participating in the game post the photo someone has taken of them on the Internet to show the unique place they took their photo.

However, the fad doesn’t come without controversy as seven doctors and nurses at a medical facility in London were suspended in late 2009 for participating in the game while being photographed on things such as gurneys and ward floors. And just over a month ago, a 20-year-old man plunged to his death after planking on a balcony on the seventh story in Australia. However, those defending the game say that death could come at any time during any given activity and just because the game caused one death, it doesn’t mean that the game can’t be played safely and in good fun.

Celebrities such as Justin Bieber, Flava Flav, Chris Brown, Rosario Dawson, Ellen Page and even chef Gordon Ramsay have taken to their social media accounts to share with their fans they, too, are also participating in the Internet web craze that many are still be introduced to.
