Box Office: ‘Cars 2’ Outdoes Original, Plus ‘Bad Teacher’

Despite the majority of negative reviews the latest installment of the Pixar movie Cars 2 has generated, it did very respectable this weekend in the box office, according to early estimates. Sequel movies rarely get very good ratings compared to its predecessor — just ask The Hangover Part II — but according to RottenTomatoes, Cars 2 has earned a dismal approval rating of just 34% by critics — a drop of 40 points compared to the original Cars back in 2006 (74%).

The movie itself generated $68 million, however, actually improving by 12% from the initial weekend for the original Cars back in June 2006 ($60 million). The latter movie went on to gross $242 million overall, but it remains to be seen if Cars 2 will be able to pick up more momentum in the coming weeks despite rather negative reviews.

In box office news, the weekend premiere of the Cameron Diaz, Jason Segal, and Justin Timberlake film Bad Teacher did an estimated $31 million, while the third weekend of Green Lantern drew $18.35 million for a total gross of $89.3 million. Super 8 did $12.1 million for a gross of $95.2 million, and week two of Mr. Popper’s Penguins rounded out the top five by bringing in $10.3 million this weekend for a total gross of $39.4 million.
