Beyonce announced that she was pregnant in her own unique way Sunday night at the MTV Video Music Awards — and the way she all but confirmed she is now eating for two set social media website Twitter hitting a brand new all-time record. Not only that, but Beyonce’s revelation also caused her to overshadow many of the highlights of this years VMAs, according to many critics, including the tributes to Britney Spears and the late Amy Winehouse, as well as Lady Gaga dressing in drag as her male alter ego.
News that she was pregnant broke the previous record during the final match of the 2011 Women’s World Cup, with Beyonce at one point generating a peak 8,868 tweets per second at 10:35PM, around the time she took to the stage and rubbed her tummy after a VMAs performance.
The previous record set this year by the 2011 Women’s World Cup had at one point a peak of 7,196 tweets per second coming in earlier this summer. She also was able to beat the peak 5,106 tweets per second after President Obama announced the killing of Osama bin Laden in May.
Not only did Twitter set records, but the VMAs themselves drew a record 12.4 million viewers overall, which was the highest rated broadcast for the telecast on MTV — at least since Nielsen and MTV started tracking ratings in 1993.
