Nigel Lythgoe, the executive producer of FOX’s hit reality series American Idol, is reportedly “upset” with Lee Dewyze, the winner of last season’s competition, for not awarding this year’s winner, Scotty McCreery, the trophy during the season finale. Lythgoe alleges that Lee was supposed to pass the torch, so to speak, to this year’s champion, but believes Lee refused to do so because he was shy to get on stage.
“I was so upset Lee DeWyze wouldn’t present the winner’s trophy to Scotty. Especially as he’d been on the show this season. I guess he was shy,” Lythgoe tweeted on Twitter. Lee, however, played defense, saying that he was not informed ahead of the live finale that he would be going on the stage to award McCreery the title.
Instead, Lee said that he was told by Nigel that he would be making the presentation after the winner’s name was announced by the show’s host, Ryan Seacrest. Lee refused to do so, however, because he didn’t want to steal Scotty’s big moment. Lythgoe is saying that Lee was informed a week ahead of the finale that he would be making the presentation.
