Alex Trebek, 71, the longtime host of the game show Jeopardy, ruptured his Achilles tendon after chasing a burglar while in a hotel in San Francisco earlier this week. Trebek, who was in the California area to host the National Geographic World Championship in Mountain View, woke up after falling asleep and noticed that a woman had been in his room going through his belongings.
“It happened at 2:30 a.m., chasing a burglar down the hallway of my San Francisco hotel when my Achilles tendon ruptured and I then fell on carpet, bruising the other leg in the process,” Trebek stated. He noted that he was going to have surgery on Friday (yesterday). The person in question, who appeared in court on Friday, is a 56-year-old woman who was booked on suspicion of burglary and stealing property. She allegedly stole Trebek’s arm bracelet that he received from his mother 20 years ago as well as some cash.
Trebek, while recounting the story to NBC’s Today Show, also revealed inadvertently that he sleeps in the nude. “I realized immediately someone had been in the room. I put on my underwear and ran down the hall to see if I could find her,” Trebek said. Shortly after the story aired, co-host Matt Lauer shared to Ann Curry that he hopes Trebek recovers but joked that he didn’t need to know that Trebek slept in the nude.
